Hot flashes vs night sweats: what your data shows

You wake at 2 a.m., warm and damp, and reach for the word. Was that a hot flash or a night sweat? Most of what you will read online answers with a shrug — a night sweat is just a hot flash that happens while you sleep, same thing, different clock. That is mostly true about the underlying biology. It is also less true than it sounds about the experience, and about what shows up in your data.

Same mechanism, different footprint

Both hot flashes and night sweats are vasomotor symptoms — episodes where the body, sensing it is too warm, opens blood vessels near the skin and sweats to shed heat. The research on the mechanism describes a narrowed thermoneutral zone, the temperature band inside which you neither sweat nor shiver, so a smaller trigger tips the body into cooling mode. That physiology is shared, which is why so many sources treat the two symptoms as one.

But a 2026 study that measured both, rather than assuming they were the same, found they do not behave identically. Night sweats ran much longer than daytime hot flashes — on the order of an hour versus a few minutes on average — and they tended to arrive earlier in the night. Women in that study described night sweats as prolonged, full-body sweating, often without the sudden, intense heat and the flash of anxiety that mark a classic daytime hot flash. Same family, different shape.

That distinction is a group-level average, not a promise about any one of your nights. But it changes how you might read your own record. A brief warm spike and a long warm stretch are not the same event on a chart, even when the word you reach for is the same.

Why the timing matters for what you notice

A few minutes of heat and an hour of it disturb sleep differently. In home studies that measured hot flashes with sternal skin-conductance sensors alongside actigraphy, a majority of overnight flashes coincided with waking — the odds of being awake jumped sharply in the minutes during a flash compared with the minutes just before it. But a real share of flashes did not wake anyone at all.

Put those two findings together and you get the honest picture. A long night sweat is more likely to leave a trace you remember and a trace your data can show, because it lasts. A short flash may pass while you sleep straight through, nudging your heart rate or temperature without ever surfacing into memory. So the night you recall as unbearable and the night your numbers flag are not always the same night — and neither one, alone, settles anything.

What your watch can and cannot see

Here is the part worth being plain about. Your Apple Watch does not detect a hot flash or a night sweat. It has no vasomotor sensor. What it has, on Series 8 and later worn in Sleep Focus, is wrist temperature recorded relative to your own recent nights, plus overnight heart rate and sleep stages. That matters because the wearable-temperature evidence is thinner than it looks. The often-cited studies of overnight skin temperature used dedicated research sensors — one well-known one used an Oura ring, not an Apple Watch — and measured group-level patterns across cycle phases, not vasomotor events in individuals. None of them validate a consumer watch as a hot-flash or night-sweat detector. So the useful question is not “which one does my watch say it was.” It is “does the timing repeat, and against my own baseline, does it cluster.” A single warmer-than-usual night is one data point, not a verdict.

Reading shape against your own baseline

This is where the population-versus-personal split does its work. There is no universal temperature or heart-rate number that marks a night sweat, because the figure that carries information is the distance from your own recent nights, not a chart of what is typical for women your age.

If your overnight readings have sat in a steady band for weeks and then a cluster of nights runs warmer, sits higher in heart rate, and lines up with episodes you logged, that relationship is a lead worth checking. If a warmer reading shows up once, on a night the bedroom was hot or you had a glass of wine, it is probably just that. The shape and the repetition are the signal. The isolated number rarely is — which is exactly why the honest version of any of this reads as estimates, not lab measurements; a data point, not a verdict.

Two practical reads follow from the timing difference:

  • A long, early-night warm stretch that recurs, with waking, fits the pattern women describe as night sweats — worth logging carefully and, if frequent or drenching, worth raising clinically.
  • A short warm blip that may not have woken you fits the classic flash — easier to miss, and a reason not to trust your memory of “a good night” over several weeks of readings.

Neither read is a diagnosis. Both are just clearer questions than “was that a hot flash or a night sweat.”

Next time heat wakes you, log it before you fall back asleep and add one word about its shape: brief or long, drenching. After a couple of weeks, that single distinction — a quick flash versus a prolonged sweat — is often more useful than any number your watch produces, because it turns a vague memory into a pattern you and your clinician can actually read. Keep wearing the watch; let the timing accumulate. The label matters less than the record.
