Sleeping respiratory rate in perimenopause

A supporting signal that can strengthen the overnight picture.

What it is

Sleeping respiratory rate is the estimated number of breaths you take per minute while asleep. Because it is collected in the same quiet part of the day, it can add another consistent piece to an overnight record.

The useful comparison is with your own recent nights, not a universal target. On its own, one value says little. Beside sleep, heart signals and wrist temperature, it can help show whether the whole night changed in one direction or whether one reading simply moved alone.

What it can — and can’t — add in perimenopause

Perimenopause often comes with nights that feel different, but respiratory rate is not specific to the menopause transition. Its useful role is supporting, not leading: read beside sleep, heart signals, wrist temperature where available and symptoms you chose to log, it can make one interpretation better supported than another.

For example, a breathing-rate shift that arrives with several other changed readings deserves a different next question from one that appears alone. That is useful prioritization, even though the number does not diagnose a hot flash, a menopause stage or a breathing condition.

How your Apple Watch measures it

With sleep tracking enabled, Apple Watch can record your breathing rate during sleep and save it in the Health app. The Vitals app can also place respiratory rate beside other overnight metrics and your typical range. Apple explicitly says respiratory-rate measurements are not intended for medical use.

Like every wrist estimate, it can be incomplete. A short sleep window, loose fit, movement, missing permission, or an unavailable sample can leave a gap. Perigee does not invent a value when Apple Health has none.

How Perigee reads it

Perigee compares sleeping respiratory rate with your own recent baseline, then uses it as supporting evidence beside the rest of the night. The morning summary still leads with the change that matters most; breathing can strengthen that explanation, show that the night changed more broadly or stay out of the way when it adds nothing.

If a value is missing, the other signals can still stand on their own. If a change persists, Perigee can point to what is repeating and suggest what to compare next. Symptoms that concern you still deserve a clinical conversation.

Does a higher sleeping respiratory rate mean perimenopause?

No. One change is non-specific. Its value is in the combination: if breathing, sleep and another overnight signal shift together, Perigee can use breathing as supporting evidence for which change deserves attention first. It still does not diagnose a menopause stage or turn the combination into a settled medical cause.

Can respiratory rate diagnose sleep apnea or another condition?

No. Apple states that its respiratory-rate measurements are not intended for medical use, and Perigee does not turn them into a diagnosis. If your breathing concerns you, discuss the symptoms and the trend with a clinician.

Why is my respiratory-rate data missing?

Apple Watch records respiratory rate while you sleep, so a short or untracked night, a loose fit, an unavailable Health permission, or simply no usable sample can leave a gap. Perigee shows the signal as unavailable rather than filling it in.
