What it is
Your resting heart rate is an estimate of how many times your heart beats per minute when you are calm and inactive. Apple works it out from background readings taken while you are awake and inactive — time you are asleep is left out — and publishes one value for each calendar day. It is a daytime figure, not a night one.
Autonomic activity is one influence, alongside sleep, activity, alcohol, caffeine, illness, medication, measurement conditions and others. A daily estimate cannot identify why a rate changed or explain a palpitation. There is also no single right number for everyone; the useful comparison is your own baseline and the symptoms around it.
How perimenopause changes it
Wearable and autonomic studies report group-level differences in sleeping pulse and heart-rate variability across menstrual-cycle or menopause stages (see the research). Those associations do not predict how one person’s daily resting-rate estimate will move and do not establish that hormones caused an individual episode.
The American Heart Association describes the menopause transition as a window of cardiovascular change and an opportunity for prevention. A dated trend can support a clinical conversation, but a watch cannot assess whether palpitations are safe. Palpitations with chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting or near-fainting, or an episode that will not settle require prompt medical attention rather than interpretation in an app.
How your Apple Watch measures it
Your Apple Watch checks your heart rate in the background at intervals that vary with your activity. Apple builds the daily figure from the readings taken when you were awake and inactive, not from your sleep, and revises it as later readings arrive — which is why it only settles at the end of the day. Perigee shows yesterday’s final figure beside last night’s other readings. One consequence: a resting heart rate can appear on a morning when your overnight readings did not, because a watch worn only in the daytime still produces one.
It is also an estimate with limits. A short night, alcohol, a cold coming on, a stressful day, a poorly fitted band, or sparse sampling can all affect the daily value. One elevated reading tells you little; the shape of the trend across weeks tells you more.
How Perigee reads it
Perigee compares your daily resting-heart-rate estimate with your own recent weeks, not a textbook average. The morning summary then looks at the night beside it: broken sleep, heat-related readings and symptoms you logged. When one contributor fits better, it can say that it likely contributed and explain why.
Every reading still has a confidence tier. When Perigee is learning your baseline, it says so once. When the evidence is usable, the summary spends its words on the strongest lead, what supports it and the next useful comparison. It never uses that interpretation to mark a palpitation safe.

Should I worry if my resting heart rate goes up?
A single higher estimate is non-specific and cannot establish its cause or safety. Compare the trend with your baseline, and seek clinical advice for a persistent or concerning change; symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting or near-fainting need prompt medical attention.
Why does my heart race when nothing's happening?
A racing or fluttering sensation can have many overlapping causes, and neither a daily resting-rate estimate nor Perigee can identify which one applies. Record when it happens and discuss new, persistent, worsening or concerning episodes with a clinician.
What's a normal resting heart rate in perimenopause?
There's no single right figure. Perigee focuses on your personal baseline and how your recent days compare, rather than a population number that may not fit you.
